Rundown of Unions and Groups for Writers
Thursday, November 1st, 2007
What are the advantages of joining a union or similar group? What do you get for your membership dues?
For one, it adds a professional element to your portfolio. Potential buyers note that you’ve “paid your dues” so to speak, and so believe that you’re “in this for the long haul.” Another advantage is the contacts you make- editors, potential clients, and etc may frequent member messages boards and member events. Another advantage is the purely social factor. If you’re practicing your craft in isolation, like so many of us do, this can be a godsend. Last, but certainly not least, are the services these groups offers. Some unions will go to bat for you over missing payments and unfair contract terms. Some have group insurance rates, while others have contract services or overviews.
Here’s some potential unions for you to check out, based on your specific genre/field/locale:
- National Writers Union- Per their front page, they represent just about all writers: authors, journalists, etc.
- American Society of Magazine Editors- Self explanatory.:)
- Canadian Authors Association- “For writers engaged in any genre.”
- Editor’s Association of Canada- Also in Francois!
- Editorial Freelancer’s Association- Includes job listings for members.
- PEN American Center- Must meet qualifications.
- Author’s Guild- Must meet qualifications.
I know I’ve left some out, so please do leave a comment regarding your choice and the potential benefits. Or, if you haven’t decided to join a union, please let us know your reasoning? Is it overrated?
