Book Summaries

Breast Cancer? Breast Health
What a gift to women of all ages! This book helped me overcome my fear of what I might discover during self-examination. I am so grateful that this book came my way and I am healthier in mind, body, and spirit thanks to Ms. Weed’s wise words! All of my questions and doubts were addressed in a voice that speaks for all the wise women who have chosen the path of natural and sensible personal health. If I could, I would give a copy of this book to every woman in the world! Read the Review

Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year
What a unique treasure this book is! I used this during my entire “childbearing year” and am so glad that it is still available so I can give it to my best friend’s daughter as she prepares for her first child. I still use the Herbal Pharmacy section quite frequently so this book has a permanent place on my bookshelf. Read the Review

A City Herbal
I never could have imagined the herbal abundance that grows between the cracks of the city sidewalks and in vacant lots! This book details the folknames, locations, historical uses, lore, legends, and uses of 34 plants commonly found in the city. I read this book like a novel, from cover to cover, and would recommend it to anyone interested our green friends! Read the Review

Common Herbs for Natural Health is an essential herbal for the newcomer to the expert. Juliette de Bairacli utilizes her Gypsy wisdom, and decades of studying herbs and healing, to create a book filled with natural remedies and recipes. What a treasure! Her respect and love for the plants, the earth, and the medicinal knowledge garnered from people of all ethnic origins is powerful, practical, and sensible. My gardens and personal health are already benefiting from this intelligent and tender book. Read the Review

Healing Wise
What a powerful book! It has changed the way I feel towards modern medicine, the chaos in my life, and even my backyard. The seven featured common weeds are given voices and distinct personalities. For instance, dandelion speaks from this book with a charming and joyous French accent. My medicine cabinet has fewer pharmaceuticals these days and an increasing assortment of odd little bottles of tinctures, oils, and salves that I have had great fun making from plants I have found within walking distance of my home. The voice of Wise Woman wisdom rings throughout this book and I find myself turning to this book for solutions to my various discomforts instead of calling the doctor. Read the Review

Luna Yoga
This is the first book on yoga that has appealed to me. Luna yoga was developed for woman by women. Adelheid Ohlig clearly intends to bring the philosophy, discipline, and healing art of luna yoga to the attention of women. I have only just begun to follow this practice daily and have high hopes for improved health and happiness. Read the Review

Moon Days
Although women experience “the curse” from their early teenage years until their early fifties, most of us don’t discuss it in depth . . . and certainly don’t write or read short stories and poetry about the subject! This book, by a collection of talented authors, is for women of any age and is inspired by the wonders, embarrassment, and power of menstruation. Surprisingly, it is a very funny and touching read. I am past menopause and who would have guessed that this book would actually make me nostalgic for that significant part of my younger years. Read the Review

Nature’s Children
Surely this is how our children were meant to be raised and nourished! In harmony with the rhythms of the earth, seasons, wild creatures, and plants the author shares her knowledge and compassion. How I wish I had known of this book when my son was younger, but it’s never too late to begin employing the remedies and recipes contained in this marvelous book which is dedicated to the simple life and family health. Read the Review

New Menopausal Years the Wise Woman Way
If this book had not been given to me by a close friend, I would be experiencing menopause in an entirely different manner. The purring voice of Grandmother Growth, who introduces many of the chapters, assured me that I am not losing my mind or harboring a terminal illness; that menopause is not something to be endured or fixed, but rather an ongoing adventure loaded with opportunity. The Wise Woman approach to the various and unexpected discomforts and joys of the Change has motivated me to seize this experience to transform my life for the better. Read the Review

Traveler’s Joy
This magical book has made me want to shelve my responsibilities and hit the road! The author’s enthusiasm and ability to embrace hardship and bounty alike are truly inspirational. I am encouraged to lighten my material load to provide space for the gifts that the simple life provides. Recipes, travel lore, herbal medicine, literary references, and personal observations make this book an enjoyable read.

Opening Our Wild Hearts to the Healing Herbs
This is a fabulous book full of the wonders of our green allies. Herbal medicine, plant lore, poetry, ceremonies, delicious recipes, and a terrific index make this book a must for anyone interested in using wild plants. The section on medicinal trees is unique in my experience. The author’s lovely spirit shines in every word and makes me wish I was a member of her family. Read the Review

Day by Day: Persistency Prepare for a “Marathon”

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009
Yep, its tourqoise

Yep, its tourqoise

A winter photo helps on a very hot day. I got a call today from an old friend, only I wasn’t home. He used to be my boss, and we both sold insurance. I left an started my own agency. He eventually changed companies. About 8 years later, I am out of the biz. It isn’t a great match for me now. He however, kept selling, often selling small plans and is quite successful. I think he loves his work. I know he loves people a nd God.

His persistency, doing little tasks day after day has created a great business. His faith and self confidence adds to his productivity. Wherever you are in your writing career, these attributes also can build your foundation for success.

I love writing my blogs, because it creates my platform for keeping words flowing and the brain working. I could use more time to finish or start other creative projects. However, I believe each step I take moves me to my greater goals. Each post I publish affims the value of my work.

I could build on these ideas and create short books or guides. I may touch the heart or mind of a reader, and help that person begin their writing.

Whatever task you are considering, do something each day to move toward it, even if it is imagining or praying about it. Persistency pays dividends that no one can repossess.

Trade Journals, Research, Summer tips Part 2

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009
imagination circles and rocks

imagination circles and rocks

Here’s Part two…from A. Mueller’s old draft. I will add comments at the end of the blog.

  • Schedule in progress reports, for yourself and/or for your clients, for longer projects. Do this by using your master list with its breakdown of the project into smaller tasks. From those tasks, set up milestones with specific deadlines. “By June 30, I will finish research and write a complete outline, introduction, and two pages of text.”
  • Take some time off to clear your brain. Focus while you work, then take a break. Every 60 to 90 minutes, get up from your chair, walk outside for five minutes, drink some water, stretch, call a friend, do some jumping jacks, lie on the couch and close your eyes (set a timer if you do that), listen to music, eat an apple. Pick something relaxing and different from what you’ve been doing, i.e., no writing, reading, or computer. Your eyes and your brain need a rest from words.
  • Take in lots of information, related and unrelated to any projects you are working on. Set up a Reader for your newsfeeds and blogs, and give yourself 20 to 30 minutes every day to scroll through, read, and comment. Don’t let it get out of hand, and weed out the information sources that don’t provide anything interesting. Read books: poetry, fiction, nonfiction. Even five or ten pages a day helps your brain stretch and grow. Talk to people who aren’t like you and listen to what they say. Ask questions about other people’s professions, hobbies, political views, home life, philosophies.
  • Schedule time to just jot down notes, follow up on ideas, develop ideas, brainstorm - don’t pressure yourself to produce “writing” during this time. Planning and researching and outlining makes writing a whole lot easier. This applies to work you are doing for clients as well as work you are doing for yourself. The blank page is your worst enemy. Come to it armed with a stack of notes, pages of research, brainstorming bubbles, quotations, pictures that inspire you. You may not use any of it in your writing, but its presence in your mind and in the room will make you sharper.
  • Trade Journals

    A few resources and possibilities.

    • A great article about writing for trade journals here at Writer Gazette. (Note that the links at the bottom of the article are outdated.)
    • Another great article with lots of tips here at Writer’s Apprentice. If you’ve never considered writing for trade journals, or you’re wondering what a trade journal is, read at least one of those articles.

A couple of trade magazines worth checking into -

    • HomeCare Magazine, for at home medical supplies, home care equipment. Check the About page and Contact page. There is nothing specific about submissions on the HomeCare Magazine website, but I’ve found that often the trade magazines don’t put up Writer’s Guidelines or Submission info on their websites. Their websites are usually directed toward the readers of the magazines, the industry professionals. They are not sites the average consumer (or freelance writer) would stumble over in search of something fun to read or something profitable to write about. So you’ll have to take some initiative, read through some articles, gather ideas and information, and make a query. Could well be worth your time.
    • MeetingsNet home page houses several different trade magazines related to the conference, hospitality, and business meeting industry. It will be best to browse and find the correct contact information for the specific magazine you want to query.
    • Lots of opportunity possible here at Expert Business Source. Topics include e-business, sales and marketing, insurance, work life, and human resources. The group has a strong online presence with blogs, newsletters, and archives. The About page directs those interested to contact the editorial team.
    • Home Accents Today provides an editorial calendar (a .pdf file).

Give your best and make it a good day.

    Comment:

This article provides terrific ideas jogging resources. Don’t stop here. Make a list of you fav mags, areas of life that you are passionate about and publications that give you ideas which could be developed into articles or short stories. Take some time to do an article a week on one of these topics. The find a place to post the article and post a comment about it elsewhere. This would be a fine tool to build your publishing vitae, make some cash, and remind the world you are here writing. Have fun! Comment by Mary MacIntyre, blogger

Tips for Summer Writing and Comments Part 1

    Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

    imagination circles and rocks

    imagination circles and rocks

You may notice frequent repeats of my photos. This is two fold. SOmetimes my computer dozes when I try to get other pics from my library, and this summer also has been very busy!

Very busy is fun. I am challenged to accomplish more and organize my time better. Fortunately my energy is much higher than last year thanks to Dr. Dan Cobb, D.O.M.. Old articles may still re-charge the batteries too. Ann Mueller, a previous blogger here had left this draft. It was long but looked good. So I’ll share it with you.

Tips to Keep Yourself Writing This Summer

    • You must have a basic plan for your week, which translates into a basic plan for each day. Use a calendar/ planner, something online or in your pocket or on your desk. Get something you’re comfortable with that will work with your lifestyle. If you are very mobile, a tablet PC, Blackberry, or small planner you can put in your purse or pocket might be most helpful. I prefer the larger weekly planner with 8×11 pages, so I have plenty of room to write in my appointments, errands, household tasks, and article deadlines, submissions, and project work.
    • Have a master list of your ongoing projects. Use the master list to break each project down into the tasks needed to accomplish it, so you know where to start and how to schedule.
    • Write in appointments for yourself on your planner. Mark specific times for accomplishing the different parts of each project. Treat these times seriously, as if you were meeting with a client.
    • Don’t forget about time needed for research, both off line and online. If you write nonfiction, research is essential, and you will often need primary sources which can mean a trip to the library. If you blog, you need time to find relevant links, graphics, and related articles. If you write fiction, you need time to research your time period, setting, language.
    • Comments: By me Mary MacIntyre
I think these words are fine. However summer also is a great time to play, be with famil and vacation. So here are a few other ideas.
      1) Don’t overschedule. Set fair and obtainable goals for projects. Example: 25 new articles.
      2) Take pictures and notes while on day trips, and vacations. Also pick up local brochures etc. for places and events you have visited.
This will provde research for new travel articles for local and regional publications, or your blogs.
      3) Identify “down times or days”. My best tme to work in my office is early morning and late evening. It is cooler then. You might build it around your famiy’s activities. At a baseball game for your daughter. Have a notepad and create article ideas.
      4) Create shorter assignments that will take less time to complete.
Enjoy the summer! Live your life fully! Rest and rejuvenate. Mary MacIntyre

Poets found at Writers in the Sky

    Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

My first writing adventure was in second grade when Miss Dorothy introduced us to poetry. I thought I was a “natural”. At seven years old I began to write. I’ve always felt an affinity for poets. If you too want to hear contempoary voices (go to youtube to really hear poets read) and go to www.writersinthesky.com and read back issues for a plentitude of poems. Do you see yours there? If not submit them. Churn your words and enjoy these. Mary

    Calming pastel colors,

    Silver moon leading

    hope for tomorrow,

    or a dark, raging sea,
    tossing waves about,
    no peace to find.

    Life is like a canvas.
You the artist hold the brush.

Gail Livesay’s passion is writing poetry but she also writes plays, fiction and non-fiction short stories and is currently revising her autobiography about growing up with undiagnosed bipolar disorder. Part of the Promise

I was her friend before she was his wife.
They had a little baby; they had a great life.
We used to go line-dancing; we played golf.
We used to go to movies; we hung out.

Part of her promise to him was not running with me.
But sometimes here was where she wanted to be.

Then he got a little problem,
    getting stoned and getting high.
We had to get him in re-hab. At least we had to try.
I cashed a pay check; handed the money to him.
Take it, dude. Do you want to owe me or them?

Part of his promise was to understand her and me.
He wanted to be well, he wanted to be clean.

It worked; he’s better. One day at a time.
Some days are good; some, not-so; mostly, he’s fine.
    We can start to stop worrying;
we’ll get it back some day.
When I see their baby smile, I know we’re okay.

Part of his promise to me was being back in their life.
    He knows I’ll always be her friend;
he knows she’ll always be his wife.

I Read the Last Page First

    I was lost
    Couldn’t find my way
Then I opened the Good Book
I read the last page first
and knew I would be found.

No need to fret and worry
    The answer was there
    for all to see.
I read the last page first
and knew God would help me.

    So when you are unsure
    which way to turn,
take the short cut back home.
    It’s on the last page
and he’ll be there for you, too!

    Like Drunken Cowboys

There’s a place inside my head where hurt never filters in,
A place to heal, where I can know I’m my own best friend,
Sometimes find it easier than facing reality,
Like drunken cowboys living without a dream.

Call me crazy; call me a fool, for shutting out the world.
I just need time to contemplate the way my life’s unfurled.
Wouldn’t want to take it out on everyone around
Like drunken cowboys tearing up the town.

I don’t want to think about forever,
Trying hard to make it through the storm.
    Toughening my feelings into leather
Til it just doesn’t matter anymore.

Take a step back to a time when
    Life was a free-for-all,
Where disagreements could always be settled
    in a barroom brawl
Where consequences and concerns were not a high priority
Like drunken cowboys living wild and free.

Writers write and send me YOUR ideas. Or Tweet me DM. http://twitter.com/makkinart As writers sometimes we get stuck in thinking of our challenges, or in repeating the same avenues of writing we have done before. However we are often multi talented and can put our words on many different pages, publications, and location (online). Writer’s in the SKY newsletter really opens our mind’s eye to the vast horizon waiting for our words.

I’m a grandma again! My daughter, Sareya, gave birth to her baby at 12:24 a.m. on June 24, 2009. He weighed in at 9 pounds and 11.8 ounces and measured 21.5 inches long. Baby Liam and his mommy are doing well. Scott Kidd is a very proud father. Here’s a photo of us. Amanda, my son’s wife, is due to give birth to Jonas next week! We are a growing and happy family.

I promised you an update on my research about short discounts for printing color books. Thanks to the information I have gathered from Aaron Shepard, Morris Rosenthal, and Dana Lynn Smith, I have discovered that Ingram will not deal with publishers who have fewer than ten books in print, and even then it may be difficult. So, I have opened an account at Lightning Source to make my book The Sid Series, Holistic Stories for Children available for printing there. They charge about $100 to upload the file and prepare it for printing. The whole process takes several weeks: you upload file, they process it, you approve it, Ingram adds it to their database, and Amazon eventually lists the book. Then, it will automatically become available through B&N.com, libraries, and anyone else who orders through Ingram.

Even though my book will be listed in Ingram’s catalogue, I probably won’t get many sales in bricks and mortar stores because I am not offering the typical “no return” policy and I am only offering a 25% discount to book retailers. Retail bookstores don’t take too kindly to that because they normally ask for publishers to sell a book to them for 55% discount and they want their money back if the book doesn’t sell within a short time period. However, bookstores could place special orders at the request of customers, which is the same deal you get with most POD publishers.

My color-printed, 48-page book will be available on Amazon.com for about 10 percent off the retail price. Since my publicity and 90% of the sales for all my books are transacted online, I will focus on selling the book through my own Web site. I’m still waiting for my illustrators to get finished with the artwork. Once they are done, I’ll compile all twelve stories into one printed book. Target pub date is September 2009.

I hope you enjoy this issue of WITS E-zine. There is a lot of great information from our subscribers. I think you will especially like the writing exercise JJ Murphy contributed.

“To write what is worth publishing, to find honest people to publish it, and get sensible people to read it, are the three great difficulties in being an author.” ~ Charles Caleb Colton quotes

That quote sums it all up, doesn’t it? The hope, the fear, the feelings that well up inside of you and if only there was a crystal ball to help us all out–to show us how to obtain what we really want for the life of our books. Unfortunately, there is no such thing. You have to pull up your bootstraps and start shoveling through the piles of information that we, as authors, need to sift through to make our most informed decisions.

I am sure you have at least looked into your publishing options . . . traditional publishing, self-publishing, Amazon.com publishing and maybe you have even thought about starting your own Web site to sell your books on your own. It’s a crazy business, isn’t it? You have so many choices–how do you know what the best choice for you will be? That is a decision that is completely up to you. You have to choose how you are going to get your book out to the world, how you are going to get people to actually purchase your book, and ultimately how you are going to profit from your book–your blood, sweat and tears.

I am here to tell you about one option that you may not have heard of yet. I am owner of a spankin’ new online publishing business called, “ebooKarma”. It is designed to allow writers the chance to get their books out to the world with no cost to them, and earn a 50% royalty. Plain and simple—that is all there is to ebooKarma. The process is quite simple:

•You send in the first five pages of your book for approval. After approved, you will receive an agreement via USPS to sign. (This agreement is much more for the author’s sake than ebooKarma’s sake.)
    • Included with the agreement will be a checklist that I use to make sure all steps are completed. You will even see what steps take place “behind the scenes,” including what emails you will receive after publication, and what efforts ebooKarma makes to market your book for you. (This sheet is purely FYI, so you can check off the requirements for which you are responsible.)
    • Next, you send a cover in JPEG (if you don’t have one, we have a graphic designer that can create one for you at a discount price), your book in PDF, keywords, a short description, a long description, and a bio of yourself.
•Done. That is all there is to it. Sure, there may be questions and clarifications along the way, but we get those ironed out quickly. When you start selling your books on ebooKarma, you will receive a 50% royalty that is deposited directly into your PayPal account. (You can choose an actual check if you wish.) You can even sign up to be an affiliate with ebooKarma, so if while promoting your own book, somebody goes to the site and buys another book… you earn 20% on that sale.

See, I told you this was simple! You can even still publish your books on other Web sites (including Amazon.com and kindle). All I ask is that you don’t sell your book any cheaper on another site. There are no hidden agendas here. No surprises. It is a straightforward process where everybody wins in the end! The slogan for ebooKarma is, “What goes around comes around.” It is my goal to provide the best service for you and to help you succeed… and in turn, I hope the same will happen for ebooKarma.

Here are some links you might find useful:

    •Sell an Ebook
    •Agreement
    •ebooKarma (where the magic happens…)
    •News & Updates
(Check out the stats on ebook sales!)

I truly hope you will find the value that ebooKarma can offer you. You can even call me on my cell at 469-360-6918 if you want. I am an “open book” available to answer any questions and take all comments and suggestions.

Also check out our writing contest with $500 grand prize. Other prizes too! (All entries eligible for publication.)

Children’s Books can plant life changing stories for children. Yvonne Perry has a whole series of children’s book for you to peruse. As a writer you can learn from her technique. She has created very affordable (digital?) books. Instead of just focusing on the masterpiece full of illustrations through a big publisher (creating a book over $10 yet still wonderful), Yvonne Perry has a series of books for $3. Thus a reader can purchase one or many and still be within budget! This becomes particularly powerful for the single Mom with a low pay job.

Ms Perry has developed several niche aras which also can keep a writer afloat in economic wavy times. Visit her page for activated links. Enjoy!
