MARCH FEATURED SCRIPT
Script: Harare, Harare
Writer: June Carryl
Date: 3/21/09

SYNOPSIS
As a child Citizen Moyo witnessed a massacre no one talks about. Now grown, an established if not well paid actor with a wife and child of his own, Citizen drives a cab to support what’s left of his family. His beloved country falling apart amid arrests, food shortages and rampant corruption, Citizen tries like everyone else just to get by, keep his head down, and his ghosts at bay. Then a trip to Scotland earns him the unwelcome attention of a state TV producer and Zimbabwe’s feared Central Intelligence Organization. When raids, arrests, and visits from the Minister of Culture fail to deter his friend and mentor from mounting a political play, Citizen finds himself in the clutches of the same government that tried to kill him 20 years before. Tortured and brutalized, he is offered his freedom in exchange for naming his friend as a terrorist. Citizen’s choice brings him face-to-face with the ghosts of his past and the myths and truths about his desperately troubled homeland.

Based on real people and events documented for the first time only in 1997, HARARE, HARARE is about an ongoing nearly unknown atrocity still taking place in Zimbabwe. HARARE, HARARE is about the human cost of violence and what it means to survive.
